The Uttarakhand Congress has decided to hold statewide agitation on July 30 to register its protest against what it calls offensive behaviour exhibited by BJP leader Smriti Irani against the Congress president Sonia Gandhi. All the frontal organisations of the party would burn effigies of Irani in all the district headquarters on the day.
The vice president (Organisation) of the Uttarakhand Congress, Mathura Dutt Joshi said that all the leaders and workers of the party strongly condemn the behaviour shown by the Union minister Irani towards the Congress president and senior MP Sonia Gandhi in Lok Sabha on July 28. He said that the party demands that Irani should immediately resign from the union cabinet. He said that the Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary had already given his explanation in the house regarding his slip of tongue while naming the president of India which occurred due to his being a non Hindi speaking person but despite this the behaviour of Irani towards the Congress president was derogatory and is akin to maligning the democracy.
Joshi said that the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has given a call that all frontal organisations of the party would burn the effigy of minister Smriti Irani in all districts of the state on July 30. All the office bearers of the party, district and Mahanagar presidents, district and block level leaders would participate in the protest.
