The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has collected revenue of over Rs one lakh by imposing penalties on people for creating conditions conducive for breeding mosquitoes across the city under its anti-dengue drive which was commenced in July to raise awareness among locals to minimise the risk of vector-borne disease this year. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the health section started the drive to minimise the risk of the disease by fumigating areas and spraying larvicide to destroy larvae in the areas vulnerable to this disease.
He said that the teams have been working on source reduction by destroying larvae found in the locals’ houses and appealing to them to not let the water accumulate in any empty vessels or objects like bottles, buckets, pipes and tyres as these become an ideal breeding space for mosquitoes in no time. The locals need to be mainly cautious in August, September and October as dengue fever outbreak generally peaks in these three months, added Khanna. He said that the corporation has also started penalising those locals who continue to follow practices that promote mosquitoes breeding. The MCD has imposed a penalty on over 300 people collecting revenue of over Rs one lakh. “Our team started imposing penalties from July. We imposed penalties on 257 people in July and about 80 people in August so far, collecting the penalty of Rs 82,000 and over 26,000 respectively,” said Khanna. He said that MCD’s aim is not to scare people but to ensure that norms are being followed to minimise the risk of dengue across the city.
