About 25,000 in Doon to be literate by January 26
As part of the literacy campaign of the Dehradun district Padho Doon Badho Doon, over 25,000 illiterate residents will find place in the literate category by this Republic Day.
After the district administration collected the data of illiterate residents in the district through Anganwadi workers a few months back, the administration started the literacy campaign – Padho Doon Badho Doon – from the month of August. As per the data provided by the chief education officer (CEO) of Dehradun, there are about 26,203 locals registered as illiterates through the survey out of which 18,490 residents have been educated so far by the administration with the help of some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). While the administration is providing classes to about 5,273 illiterates, the remaining 2,440 registered illiterates are mostly sick, dead, migrated to other locations or some names got registered twice during the survey.
Moreover, the district administration had set the aim to make literate all the registered residents by January 26, 2021. On the question of whether the 5,273 illiterates who recently started their classes will be educated by this date, the chief development officer (CDO) Nitika Khandelwal stated that the administration is optimistic that the remaining locals will become literate by this Republic Day. She however admitted that areas like Vikasnagar and Doiwala which had large illiterate people certainly posed serious challenges for the administration.
