Accused escapes on way to jail from court

A man accused of theft escaped from police custody while being escorted from the court to the jail on Tuesday. Resident of Raipur in Laksar, Sikander was arrested in a 2019 case of theft.The matter is pending in the court. According to sources, after securing bail earlier the accused was not appearing in the court due to which the court had issued a warrant. Acting on the warrant the Laksar police arrested Sikander and presented him in the court. He was being brought from Laksar to Roorkee jail after he could not get bail from the court. At about 5:30 on Tuesday evening the police were bringing him to the Roorkee sub-jail but it started to rain heavily when the police vehicle reached near Nagla Imarti bypass. The vehicle was stopped due to the heavy rain and taking advantage of the opportunity, Sikander escaped from police custody. As the information was relayed, personnel from various police stations jointly launched a combing operation but could not trace Sikander. A drone was also used in the search without success. Manglaur police circle officer Bahadur Singh Chauhan said that the police were searching for the escaped accused, adding that he will be found soon.
