State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) on Wednesday directed the Education department to take action against schools that pressurise parents to buy costly textbooks from private publishers rather than books of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The member of the commission Vinod Kaparwan said that the commission is taking cognisance of the issue recently raised by many parents that various private and aided schools are being pressurised to buy costly textbooks of private publishers for financial benefits. He said that as per the rules, the schools concerned cannot force parents to buy textbooks other than those belonging to NCERT. Such activities are not just blatant violation of rules but it also burns a hole in the pocket of parents as the cost of a single textbook by some private publishers is more than double of the price of the whole set of NCERT books, added Kaparwan. Considering this, the commission has sent a letter to the education department to take strict action against such violations across the district to ensure school children and parents are not being harassed this way for financial gains. He said that the commission has asked the department to submit a report on the actions taken by them against the schools before April 24.
