Local groups insist on holding Mahapanchayat irrespective of administration’s disapproval
The Uttarkashi district administration on Tuesday rejected the appeal of an organisation that had sought permission to conduct a Mahapanchayat on June 15 in Uttarkashi’s Purola regarding the alleged love Jihad cases. The organisation had appealed to the district administration to allow the activities like carrying out rallies under the Mahapanchayat on Thursday in view of the alleged love Jihad cases. However, the district administration rejected the appeal on Tuesday.
The sub divisional magistrate of Purola Devendra Sharma told The Pioneer that the district administration has rejected their appeal to conduct Mahapanchayat on June 15 considering the current scenario in the town. He said that the administration is also in contact with the police to ensure harmony among communities along with ensuring that law and order are not disturbed in the area. “We have rejected their appeal to carry out any such activity at present that can potentially worsen the situation. If they go ahead with their proposed Mahapanchayat, strict action will be taken against them as per the law,” said the SDM.
The additional director general of police (crime, law and order) V Murugesan also said that the local police have been directed to stay alert day and night considering the sensitivity of the situation in the town. He said that local police will act strictly against violations which disrupt law and order in the area. Meanwhile, the president of Gram Pradhan Sangathan of Purola, Ankit Rawat said that they will conduct Mahapanchayat as planned irrespective of the administration’s disapproval. He said that several people and groups in the town will come together in the Mahapanchayat to peacefully talk and discuss the love Jihad issues in the area and express what they feel about it.
