The administration is gearing up to demolish about 500 encroachments from 129 slums settled on the riverbed of the Rispana River in the first week of June. After the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) sent notices to 89 slum dwellers about two weeks ago, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has now sent notices to 413 slum dwellers. The administration has started making preparations to demolish all marked encroachments by June 30 as per the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). According to the officials, the MCD has received about 30 to 40 objections after notices were issued to 89 slum dwellers but only a few were found genuine. The MCD is expected to demolish about 70 to 75 encroachments. Besides this, MDDA officials have also claimed that when the said lands were handed over to them over a decade ago, there were only about 100 establishments. However, MCD claimed that over 400 encroachments were settled on MDDA’s land and sent its list to the officials concerned about three weeks ago. After analysing it, MDDA finally sent notices to all encroachers by Wednesday evening and asked them to raise objections supported by relevant documents that prove that their houses were established before 2016, as per the officials. Considering this, at least 300 encroachments of MDDA are expected to be demolished in June. The officials said that a joint operation of the district administration, MDDA and MCD will be conducted to demolish these encroachments as per the order of the district magistrate Sonika. “MDDA will verify objections raised by slum dwellers after a week. After this, a joint team will be formed to demolish encroachments as per DM order. The demolition process is expected to commence in the first week of June,” the officials said.
