Terming the Agnipath scheme a reform launched by the Indian Army, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the objective behind rolling out the scheme was to keep the average age in armed forces young. The Opposition parties should refrain from playing sectarian politics over such a sensitive issue with significant bearing on national security, he said in his Krgil Diwas address to mark the 25th anniversary of India’s victory.
Further, he dismissed the allegation that the Centre had launched the Agnipath scheme to save pension money. He wondered why the government should think of pension for today’s recruits when the matter would come up after 30 years. He reiterated that the scheme had nothing to do with the Centre and it was an army idea meant to keep the armed forces continuously fit for war. “The average age of Indian soldiers being higher than the global average has been a matter of concern,” he added.
