AIIMS Rishikesh stated on Thursday that experienced thoracic surgeons working for this State-run health facility have successfully removed a giant tumour inside the chest cavity of a 44-year-old male patient. Weighing 3.2 kg with a size span of more than 22 cm, this tumour kept compressing the patient’s lung. The patient is now healthy and ready to be discharged, the hospital further claimed.
Sharing details, the head of the CTVS department, Dr Anshuman Darbari said that the patient Vikram Singh, a resident of Chamoli, started having chest pain in July 2023. “The tumour size was large and seemed non-operable with lack of availability of experienced thoracic surgeons. So, he came to AIIMS Rishikesh. From CT scan, it was found that a giant tumour had formed over the patient’s left lung. This tumour completely compressed the lung with heart and was about to engulf the right lung,” he said and added that his team comprising Dr Avinash Prakash (CTVS) with Anaesthesia support of Dr Ajay Kumar had removed the tumour by a high-risk open surgery on June 11.
Further, the entire treatment of the patient, including the surgery, was done free of cost at state government expense under the Golden Card Scheme, Darbari said.
The executive director of AIIMS Dr Meenu Singh lauded the team of doctors who had performed the surgery and said that AIIMS Rishikesh is fully capable of treating and performing surgery on all diseases related to thoracic and chest. Patients should take advantage of these health facilities, she added.
