Life of two year old saved. Dedicated paediatric CTVS ICU to start soon: Director

The doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh have claimed to have performed a complex cardiac surgery on a two year old child which saved his life. The paediatric cardio thoracic surgeon of the CTVS department at AIIMS- R, Dr Aneesh Gupta said that the child, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar district had a hole in his heart since birth. This condition is called ventricular septal defect (VSD). Pneumonia, cough, cold, fever, loss of weight, difficulty in drinking milk, sweating on the forehead and feeling of tiredness are some of the symptoms of VSD. “Its surgery must be done compulsorily during the first or second year of age.   Surgery in early age is the only option in VSD and failure to do so increases the pressure on the child’s lungs which can be life-threatening. Due to the lockdown, the child didn’t receive timely treatment and there was pressure in his lungs. The angiography revealed that the child’s surgery involves high risk,’’ he said.  A team of doctors led by Dr Gupta successfully carried out the complex operation which lasted for four hours and the life of the child was saved.

Congratulating the team of doctors for the successful surgery, the Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Ravi Kant said that a dedicated paediatric CTVS ICU would soon start in the institute.
