AIIMS- Rishikesh to start organ transplant division

In what can be called as good news for the people interested in organ donation and transplant, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh has decided to set up a special division for the purpose. Named the division of organ transplant, the centre will help in streamlining the transplant services in the premier institute.
The in-charge of the division and transplant surgeon in general surgery department of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Karamvir said that the AIIMS Rishikesh has undertaken an awareness campaign in the public about organ transplant. He said that head of gastroenterology department Dr Rohit Gupta, Dr Anand Sharma, head of urology department Dr Ankur Mittal and Dr Nirjhar Rakesh of surgical gastroenterology department will provide guidance and assistance in the functioning of the new division. The division is also planning to start an OPD for the people interested in organ donation and transplantation. Dr Karamvir said that more than three thousand persons have registered with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
The officiating director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Meenu Singh said that the division of organ transplant will provide facilities and cater to the needs of organ donor and receiver. The division will have facilities to transplant complex organs such as kidney, liver and pancreas. She said that the pancreas transplant facility will take some time to start but the AIIMS Rishikesh is already providing facilities for kidney and liver transplant. The division will provide information, intricacies, protocols of donor and receiver and other facilities and soon a helpline number for organ donation and transplantation will also be released.
