The officiating director general of police Abhinav Kumar said that working towards bringing Uttarakhand Police among the top five police forces of the country will be the main priority of the police. He also said that in view of the increasing number of pilgrims and tourists in the near future, the formation of a separate battalion of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for the Kumaon range is also under consideration. He said this at a press conference here on Tuesday, where he talked about the priorities set by the police for this year.
The DGP said that the police will pay special attention to traffic management and take measures to ensure that maximum accidents can be prevented across the State. “The number of people killed in accidents last year was extremely high than those murdered. There were over 200 people who were murdered last year while there were over 1,400 people who died in road accidents in the State. Since various factors are behind accidents in various parts of the State, the police will work to improve the situation accordingly,” he added. The quick disposal of women related crimes and cyber crimes will also be the priority of the police. The police will also emphasise on including new techniques and providing training to police personnel to resolve cases. Kumar said that the department will also prepare training modules regarding the three new criminal laws including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
and will provide training to all investigators. He said that maintaining safety, law and order in Char Dham Yatra, Kanwad Yatra, Lok Sabha elections, National Games 2024 expected to be held in the State and disaster management are major challenges of the police this year and the police will deal with this challenge effectively. The DGP said that the department will also try to fill all vacant posts within six months by starting the recruitment process soon. “We will also work to ensure that police personnel holding different posts like sub inspectors, constables among others should also get timely promotions like IPS officers,” said Kumar.
