In latest news from Uttarakhand, in a piece of good news for the people of Kumaon region suffering from health facility scarcities, an AIIMS branch may come up in Haldwani on the HMT land. The Union minister and Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar MP Ajay Bhatt met the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on this matter. He said after the meeting that establishment of an AIIMS branch in Kumaon region is an imperative in view of the poor people from the remote mountainous villages being forced to take the seriously ill persons either to the AIIMS in Rishikesh or in Delhi for proper treatment. He also cited the adverse geographical conditions of the region which make it difficult for the ill to be transported either to Rishikesh or to Delhi during the rainy season and the winter due to flood, landslides and snowfall. He also cited the accommodation problems being faced by the poor villagers in Rishikesh or in Delhi where staying in hotels is quite expensive. He further said that he had already had talks with the director AIIMS Delhi M Srinivas on this matter and he had told him that founding an AIIMS branch in Kumaon was possible if the HMT land could be acquired for housing it. The Union minister also informed that approval had been granted for a satellite AIIMS to come up at Kichha town in Udham Singh Nagar district.
