About 2,000 buses operating on Char Dham routes will have Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) installed in them for the first time in Uttarakhand. The installation of these devices in buses will help in tracking the movement of the vehicles, ensure passengers’ safety and can help in providing swift help in case of accidents, the nodal officer of Char Dham Yatra and regional transport officer (Administration) of Dehradun division Sunil Sharma said. He said that all new vehicles bought after the year 2019 came with installed VLTD so operators of all vehicles before 2019 were directed to mandatorily install the device. “The department has made a joint rotation arrangement with nine private companies for the pilgrims who will operate over 1,800 buses on Char Dham routes this year. Besides this, 100 buses of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) will also operate on these routes. The department has also set up two passenger facilitation centres at Yatra Bus Stand and ISBT in Rishikesh, and near Rahi hotel in Haridwar to ensure pilgrims can easily get these buses from the centres. These centres will operate from 8 AM to 6 PM every day,” Sharma said. He also informed that the department will also set up some resting points on Char Dham routes in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts with the help of respective district magistrates to ensure drivers can take some rest there during the long and hectic journey. This will minimise the risk of accidents that occur when the drivers are either too tired or sleep deprived, Sharma added.
