The claim made by a minor girl about being allegedly raped in an observation home located in Haldwani has turned out to be false, the Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) minister Rekha Arya said. The minister said that the police investigation and medical report have confirmed that the girl was not raped. She had purportedly made up the allegations because she wanted to return home from the government facility, the minister said.

Arya said on Friday that there were media reports earlier this month about a case of a minor girl in an observation home being allegedly raped. In response to this, the minister directed the suspension of the observation home assistant Deepa Arya and the Home Guard Ganga was sent back to her department. The two were accused of taking the minor out of the observation home, where she was allegedly raped. Further, a two-member committee was also formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, she said.

The WECD minister further added that the WECD department and the police investigated the entire incident and arrived at the conclusion that the allegation of rape made by the girl was false. The medical report of the girl did not confirm rape. The minister added that the girl, who was placed in the observation home wanted to go back to her own home and fabricated the rape allegations. After the allegations were found to be false, the authorities have reinstated the two female staff against whom action had earlier been initiated.
