Says former Punjab CM should not help BJP directly or indirectly

The general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in charge of Punjab Congress, Harish Rawat has said that the recent statements of former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh suggest that he is under some pressure. Rawat addressed the media persons here on Friday and cleared the stand of the party on the Punjab issue. The AICC general secretary said that he has learned from the media reports that Captain Amarinder Singh has said that he was humiliated by the Congress party. Rawat said that Singh was made CM for two terms and 9.5 years by the Congress party and was made PCC chief three times and asked if this is the humiliation he is talking about?

Rawat said that recent closeness shown by Amarinder Singh with Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders raises a question mark on the secular credentials of Amarinder. He said that Captain Amarinder and BJP are not ideologically similar and the BJP which is anti Punjab and anti farmer wants to use Amarinder as a mask. “Amarinder Singh has a big personality and status and he should not let himself become the mask of BJP. He should not help BJP directly or indirectly,’’ he said.

Rawat accepted that the MLAs of party in Punjab were not happy with Amarinder Singh for inaction in the sacrilege issue and to address it the party high command had set up a three member panel headed by senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge and the panel has set up a 18 point plan but it too was ignored. On the issue of resignation of PCC president Navjot Sidhu, Rawat said that Sidhu gets emotional and impulsive at times but added that talks were held between CM Charanjeet Singh Channi and Sidhu and everything would be sorted out.

Rawat who also is the head of the campaign committee of Uttarakhand Congress for the upcoming elections said that his complete focus is on the Uttarakhand election.
