The Congress activists in Bhatwari block of Uttarkashi district staged a demonstration on Tuesday over the Ankita Bhandari murder case. Led by the block Congress president, Manoj and former village head, Sanjeev Nautiyal, the protest saw the party activists shouting slogans demanding a CBI investigation. They also torched the BJP government in its effigy.
The protesters alleged that the State government had been attempting to protect some influential people involved in this heinous crime, thus depriving the victim’s family of justice. The Congress leaders stated that the agitation would continue until an impartial CBI investigation was conducted and all the accused, especially the VIPs, were punished.
Addressing the gathering, the district Congress president, Pradeep Singh Rawat said that the Ankita Bhandari murder case had shaken the conscience of the State. “If the State government is truly serious about justice, it should recommend a CBI investigation without wasting a moment and immediately arrest all the influential accused involved in the case,” he said, adding that his party stands with the victim’s family and would continue the struggle from the streets to the Assembly until justice is achieved. He further said that this is not just a matter of justice for a particular family but it concerns the safety and dignity of all the girls of Uttarakhand.
