Anshuman Gaekwad succumbs to Cancer

The cricket fraternity and the top leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister, mourned the death of the former member of the India’s cricket team Anshuman Gaekwad who succumbed in Vadodara after battling long with blood cancer.  

Aside from donning the national jersey in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs,   he also served Indian cricket as a selector. The old- time cricket fans still remember him for his gritty 81 at Jamaica in 1976 and 201 against Pakistan at Jalandhar in 1983 as he faced an aggressive bowling attacks in both and held his ground.   In domestic cricket too, he had a remarkable record having featured in over 200 first-class games with over 12,000 runs, including 34 centuries and 47 fifties.

Condoling Gaekwad’s death, the PM Narendra Modi said he had immensely contributed to the Indian cricket as a gifted player and a competent coach. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed him as a legendary cricketer and recalled how he had enhanced the pride in the Indian cricket.  

The BCCI chief Roger Binny and India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir mourned his death while recalling their close association with the deceased cricketer. Former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also condoled the legendary cricketer’s death, saying he had fond memories of making his Test debut under his coaching.
