The emergency department of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital has initiated the administration of anti-rabies injections on site. This service, which was available in OPD so far, began in the emergency department too on Friday. Informing about this, the head of the emergency department at GDMC hospital, Dr NS Bisht informed that he has long been considering ways to gradually enhance the department’s services. Along with officials concerned, it was decided to introduce the anti-rabies injection service in the emergency department. He emphasised that the primary goal of offering this service in the emergency ward is to provide convenient access to patients during times of urgency. Earlier, the service was limited to the outpatient department (OPD), operating from 9 AM to 3 PM, resulting in patients sometimes having to wait up to 12 hours during emergencies. To address this issue, the new service has been initiated to ensure that patients no longer endure long waits for anti-rabies injections, he said.
He further informed that the emergency medical officer will evaluate cases of dog bites and the nurses present at the department will administer the injections to patients. Typically, intradermal anti-rabies injections are given four times a month. There are two types of anti-rabies injections available, intradermal and intramuscular, for standard use. He added that intradermal injections are typically administered directly into the skin in four doses. Government hospitals commonly administered intradermal injections. He emphasised that on Friday, they treated three to four cases of dog bites and administered anti-rabies injections to the patients.
Bisht further intends to enhance more facilities at the emergency ward in near future in order to provide easy access to the patients.
