Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. While the director, Manish Kumar Naja signed for ARIES, the director, IITM, A Suryachandra Rao put his signature in the MoU. They said that the agreement would promote collaborative research on climate change and long-term observations of various climate-related parameters. Long-term studies of meteorological parameters, greenhouse gases, short-lived climate factors and soil moisture will be conducted, too. Under the agreement, a climate observation station of Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON) will be set up at the Devasthal Observatory in ARIES.
Notably, BCON is a national observation initiative conceived and operated by IITM under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, aimed at developing a long-term and high-accuracy climate monitoring system across the country. Through BCON, a robust national database will be created that will help identify long-term climate trends, promote climate change research and support evidence-based policy making.
