The Sports minister Rekha Arya flagged off the National Games promotion teams for the torch march, which will begin on December 26 from Haldwani for the upcoming 38th National Games. Arya stated that the torch march will cover a month-long journey, reaching Dehradun on January 25. During this period, various events will be organised in every district over the course of two to three days. These events will include a cycle rally, a marathon, Prabhat Pheri, tug-of-war, armwrestling competitions and quizzes in schools. The initiative aims to register at least 500 volunteers in every district to assist in organising the National Games, she said.
Arya also chaired a review meeting on Monday with the district magistrates and other officials from all 13 districts regarding the preparations for the National Games. She instructed the officials concerned to create selfie points at the events, allowing the public to take pictures with symbols of the National Games. Further, youth dressed as the mascot ‘Mouli’ will engage with the public. She emphasised that during the National Games, there will be efforts to showcase Uttarakhand’s culture in a fresh and appealing manner. A total of five performances by the Pandavas band will be held across the State during the torch march. Additionally, discussions are underway with folk artists like Kamala Devi, with plans to host one or two major cultural events in each district, she said.
Arya also announced that this year’s Republic Day events on January 26 will reflect the National Games theme. Tableaux featuring symbols related to the National Games will be included in the celebrations at schools and colleges. Further, students will learn about the importance and history of national games, as well as the benefits of excelling in sports during Republic Day observances, she said.
Arya also inaugurated a workshop at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on doping for the athletes participating in the National Games. She emphasised that many players mistakenly believe that taking just one medication cannot result in a doping violation. She urged the athletes to remember that their parents have invested significant trust in them by supporting their journey to become athletes. She encouraged them to keep in mind that they should never let their parents experience humiliation because of their choices in their sports careers.
