The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Vidhan Sabha, Yashpal Arya has said that the decision to remove the alleged encroachments on Haldwani- Nainital highway in the Nainital district will render more than 1,000 families homeless. He suggested that the State government should take steps for a legal solution to save the livelihood of these families.
Arya said that recently the High Court has directed the district administration to remove encroachments from Khutani Mor to Padampuri in the Nainital district. He said that the shopkeepers, restaurants and hotel owners are living for years in the area and now suddenly their livelihood is in peril. Arya said that many of these buildings are built on lease and on government allotments and they have received bank loans and availed subsidies from governments under various
schemes. They are provided with facilities like electricity and water, he added. Arya said that in the name of removal of encroachment, similar complaints of uprooting people who have been settled for years are coming from all over the state. The LoP said that it is the duty of the government to find ways of livelihood for the people of the state and here the government is destroying the people who have been living for years.
Arya added that the government should first allocate land to all of them and resettle them and then take some action. He said that if needed, the government should bring an ordinance to protect the people.
