The Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Rekha Arya has proposed that Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) laboratories should be established in the industrial areas of the State. She stated this while virtually participating in the governing council meeting of the BIS held in Delhi on Friday. During the meeting, she proposed setting up BIS laboratories in Uttarakhand’s industrial areas, specifically in Dehradun’s Selaqui, Haridwar and the SIIDCUL industrial zone of Udham Singh Nagar. She said that the increasing number of factories in the State necessitates local testing facilities to reduce the need for businesses to send products to Delhi for evaluation. She emphasised that this move will also create employment opportunities in the region. Arya said that the governing council of the BIS, under the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution, is responsible for overseeing the quality and standards of industrial products. She is also a member of this council, which aims to ensure the maintenance of industrial standards across the country. She stated that the proposed labs will support the growing industrial sector in Uttarakhand by providing accessible testing services, promoting efficiency and contributing to the local economy through job creation. She is optimistic that her proposal will be considered by the council and laboratories will be set up in industrial areas as per the requirement, she added.
