In latest news from Dehradun, expressing strong reservations over the short monsoon session of the State assembly and the 10 per cent horizontal reservation bill for the statehood activists and their dependents being sent to select committee, the leader of the opposition in the assembly and Congress veteran Yashpal Arya said that it was part of the State government’s stratagem to run away from the questions being raised by the opposition. He also accused the State government of disregarding with impunity the rules of procedure and conduct of business in the assembly. Citing the rules, he said that it was mandatory on the part of the State government to ensure that the State legislatures hold a minimum of 60 days of sittings during three mandatory sessions in a year. “But last year, the State assembly met for just eight days and this year so far, the house has met for seven days. These figures reveal that the State government does not want to hold the rule-mandated sittings of the house. However, let me reiterate that my party as a responsible opposition will continue to raise the people’s questions and important issues facing the Stare,” he said.
He further said that in the two days of the session, the Congress legislators had raised a host of issues under rules 310 and 58 like destruction going on under the garb of anti-encroachment operations, impacts of natural calamity, spiralling unemployment, ill-conceived land laws, worsening law and order, daily power outages, steep hike in power tariffs, winding up schools in the name of cluster and surging human animal conflict incidents among others. “But regrettably, the State government did not respond properly to these issues broached by the opposition in deliberate disregard of the dignity of the house,” the leader of the opposition said.
