Scientists and astronomers at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) here made the most of Jupiter appearing closer to Earth on Saturday. The scientists studied this phenomenon while astronomy lovers enjoyed the opportunity. Apart from the ARIES scientists observing with telescopes, noted amateur astronomer Ajay Talwar was also here along with his team for the occasion. Local astronomy buffs and astrophotographers had also reached the institute. As the sun set on Saturday, Jupiter was rising exactly opposite it. The planet appeared clearer as the night deepened and was also visible with naked eyes. Four of its Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto were also visible to people using telescopes. The ARIES scientists, Talwar and his team along with astronomy lovers observed this phenomenon throughout the night. The institute’s outreach in-charge Virendra Yadav informed that visitors about the science behind this astronomical event. Talwar said that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and that observations would continue throughout the night. Clear weather resulted in good visibility due to which four of Jupiter’s at least 92 moons were also visible.
