Authorities ask schools to adopt staggered timings and ensure proper parking

Sunday, 31 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Considering heavy traffic on main roads during school timings in Dehradun, the district administration has asked the schools’ administration to adopt staggered timings to minimise the pressure of traffic on roads during the same time. It has asked schools to present their plans to ensure proper parking within their establishments and how they will determine different school timings to minimise traffic on roads.

This was stated by the additional district magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Ramji Sharan Sharma in a meeting held with schools’ representatives which was also joined by the officials of traffic police, transport department and the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). He also said that the school management should also operate school vehicles like buses as much as possible so that parents can avoid using their personal vehicles to pick up and drop off children. This will bring a considerable change in the traffic system in the city during school hours.

The ADM also said that vehicles should not be parked outside the school gate during school hours and if needed, they must use the vacant ground of the school as parking during school hours. Those schools which do not have adequate parking should identify parking spaces nearby. Besides this, Sharma also asked the regional transport officers to work on the plan to identify city bus routes for schools in the city area.

The superintendent of police, traffic, Sarvesh Panwar also asked the school management to not allow vehicles to be parked on the roads as these vehicles cause traffic chaos on roads and causes hindrance in traffic movement. He also appealed to them to adopt staggered timings as the same timings of all schools cause heavy traffic jams and make it more difficult for police to manage traffic on roads.
