Historic condemned building closer to demolition after SC orders in long-standing dispute

The authorities in Dehradun are gearing up to evacuate a condemned building owned by Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) located on Chakrata Road next week. The officials informed that there was a dispute between LIC and the tenants of their building for a long time.

The LIC building is one of the oldest buildings in the city and had been declared a dilapidated structure by bodies like Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) and Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) some years ago.  The latter has even claimed to have issued several notices of evacuation to the tenants considering the vulnerability of the structure and the risk it poses to the lives and property of tenants and others living nearby but nothing concrete came out of any action taken by authorities. The LIC had appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the dispute where it has won considering which, all the tenants will have to evacuate the building as per the SC orders.

The Dehradun district administration along with the police has started preparations to evacuate the place in the next week, possibly on September 14. According to the city magistrate Kusum Chauhan, the superintendent of police (city) Sarita Dobhal had appealed to the district administration to provide a magistrate to carry out the evacuation process which has been approved by them. “We have appointed a magistrate as per the request of the police. The further process will be carried out by the police and the administration will provide all the required assistance. It is being said that the evacuation will be done on September 14 but nothing has been finalized yet,” said the city magistrate. The police officials also stated that they are gearing up to evacuate the building next week as per the rules and will take all necessary actions to ensure the whole evacuation process is completed smoothly.
