Authorities identify issues, direct corrective steps after fatal mishap at Lachhiwala toll plaza

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Following the fatal accident at Lachhiwala toll plaza on Monday that claimed two lives, a joint inspection of the site was conducted by the senior officials from the Police, Transport department and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to assess the causes and discuss immediate measures to prevent future incidents.

The regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division, Shailesh Tiwari said that during the inspection, officials identified key areas requiring improvement to enhance road safety. The officials concerned were directed to increase the number of rumble strips and speed breakers on both sides to control vehicle speed near the toll plaza as the lane markings there had faded, making it difficult for drivers to identify designated lanes.

It was recommended that these markings be repainted in yellow and fitted with cat-eye reflectors for better visibility, Tiwari said. He stated that besides this, the lane dividers at the toll plaza were found to be too short. Authorities directed that they be extended by approximately 30 metres to improve lane discipline and reduce the risk of collisions.

Tiwari said that to address overspeeding, which has been a major factor in past accidents, the team suggested installing speed cameras near the toll plaza. Further actions will be taken to implement these measures as part of efforts to improve road safety at the toll plaza, he said.
