Authorities plan measures to improve waste management in rural areas

The Dehradun district administration has directed measures to raise public awareness and improve garbage disposal in the rural areas. On the directions of the district magistrate, the chief development officer Jharna Kamthan held a meeting with officials concerned and issued necessary instructions to them regarding solid waste management. She also sought suggestions for waste management in rural areas from the public representatives present in the meeting.
The CDO directed officials to conduct a publicity and public awareness proigramme for waste disposal in the rural areas. The people should be made aware to segregate dry and wet waste at home. She told the public representatives that their role was also important for selection of land for the purpose of waste disposal and segregation. She asked them to cooperate with the Revenue department for selection of the land for the said purpose. The CDO further said that Gram Panchayats doing good work in solid waste management should be awarded and other Gram Panchayats should also be motivated to do the same.
Further, self help groups should also be linked to the efforts for undertaking sanitation and public awareness campaigns. The CDO also directed all the sub divisional magistrates and block development officers to hold a review meeting on a weekly basis to review the waste disposal. Action should also be taken as per the regulations against the persons dumping garbage in the open. She further directed all the sub divisional magistrates and block development officers to expedite the selection of lands in the rural areas for making waste segregation centres. The public representatives attending the meeting also gave their suggestions for waste management in rural areas and requested that a public awareness drive should also be undertaken through school children.
The district Panchayati Raj officer MM Khan informed about the various activities related to waste disposal along with provisions in the pertinent regulations. He said that the clearance from the Forest department is awaited for the waste segregation centre to be built in the Sauda Saroli area. Panchayat representatives from various parts of the district along with district and departmental officials concerned were also present in the meeting.
