Authorities seize 16 quintals of banned plastic products in Selaqui

Authorities seized 16 quintals of banned single-use plastic products worth nearly Rs 2.5 lakh from a shop in Selaqui area of Dehradun on Tuesday. A joint team of officials from Nagar Panchayat, Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) and police conducted an inspection under an anti-plastic checking campaign in the market area of Selaqui on Tuesday. The officials said that the team found a huge storage of single-use plastic items in the house of a local Vijay, who lives in Kainchiwala area of Selaqui.
The officials said that he informed the police about this storage when they started questioning him in the market area regarding him allegedly selling banned plastic products. He informed the police that he allegedly buys and stores plastic products which are banned by the government to sell them to shopkeepers in market areas to earn profit as there is a considerable demand for such products among people. The officials said that the team reached his house and searched his whole house to recover all banned products. The team found a huge storage of 16 quintals of banned single-use plastic products along with other banned products that included plastic carry bags and cutleries among others.
The executive engineer of Nagar Panchayat, Bhagwant Singh Bisht seized all products worth over Rs 2.5 lakh and imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh on the offender as per the rules. The officials said that the team will continue to conduct this campaign to prevent the selling, purchasing and usage of banned single-use plastic products. The authorities will impose a hefty fine along with taking legal action if the offender is found to be guilty of selling such products again, as per the officials.
