After striving for hours to evacuate the residents from the 82-year-old LIC owned building in Chakrata Road in Dehradun on Wednesday, only eight out of about 80 tenants evacuated the building. The LIC building is one of the oldest buildings in the city and had been declared a dilapidated structure by Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) and Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) some years ago. After a long legal battle with the tenants of the building, the LIC finally won the case and asked the tenants to evacuate the building as per the Supreme Court orders. However, most of the tenants have denied leaving the building. Many even claim that the building is definitely old but not dilapidated and the LIC has presented false details to authorities concerned. LIC also issued notices to 14 tenants for evacuation. Considering the dissent by the tenants and locals, LIC along with the district administration team and the police force reached Chakrata Road to carry out the evacuation process. Tehsildar Sohan Singh, a part of the evacuation team, said that the team reached the location around 11 AM but the agitated tenants and locals did not let the members enter the building. The teams were there for over five hours and only four residential tenants and four shopkeepers evacuated their premises. The management from LIC and the tenants were having disagreements over the issue but the LIC finally gave the remaining tenants four days to evacuate the building, informed Singh. The evacuation process will resume after Sunday as the district officials concerned and about 1,000 police personnel are deployed in the security arrangements of the Road Safety World Series at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, as per the official.
