Experts have cautioned against the excessive consumption of Ayurvedic and home remedies without expert advice for dengue prevention as it can lead to adverse effects. With the increase in dengue cases leading to three active cases in the district, individuals are proactively turning to home remedies in an effort to prevent the disease. However, experts advised against overconsumption and recommend seeking guidance from healthcare professionals or Ayurvedic consultants for optimal results.
Senior Ayurvedic physician Dr JN Nautiyal emphasised that overindulgence in anything, be it food or medication, can have negative side effects. He added that for dengue prevention, Ayurvedic remedies such as papaya leaf juice, giloy, kiwi fruit, goat milk and others are recommended. While these traditional remedies are believed to be effective in preventing dengue, it is important to use them in moderation. Overconsumption of these items for dengue can negatively impact the metabolism and indirectly lead to infections and other digestive issues, he said. He further added that it is advisable to avoid excessive consumption of these remedies while treating dengue or taking early precautions and instead consult Ayurvedic experts for the most effective results.
Dietician at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Richa Kukreti highlighted that consuming papaya leaf juice, giloy, coconut water, and other items can be highly effective in preventing or treating dengue. However, she has noticed that individuals sometimes consume these items excessively in an attempt to speed up the recovery process, which should be avoided. Excessive consumption of such items can lead to adverse effects, including digestive problems, bloating and various other issues. Given this information, she advised individuals to consult a doctor or an ayurvedic consultant before consuming these remedies, in order to determine the appropriate dosage for each individual.
