Members of the Multi-Purpose Hall (Badminton Hall) at Parade Ground have decided to organise a demonstration from 7 AM to 10 PM on September 15, protesting against the increase in monthly fees. They alleged that the fee hike indicates an attempt to commercialise sports.
A member of the badminton group, Himanshu Arora shared details about the situation. He informed that many retired individuals, as well as national and international level players, frequent the government-owned badminton hall at Parade Ground. Approximately 100 members visit the hall in the morning and about 50 to 60 in the evening.
Usually, the fee for the badminton hall has been Rs 1,000. However, over the past few months, the authorities have raised the fees to Rs 2,500.
Arora noted that members are unwilling to pay the increased amount, as they find it excessive, especially compared to private halls, where the fees range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.
On Monday, when members tried to access the badminton hall, officials barred them from entering until they paid the raised fee of Rs 2,500.
Arora expressed concern that the government prioritises profit over promoting sports and physical well-being through sports. “We have approached several authorities about this issue, but no action has been taken. In the light of this, we will hold a protest outside the badminton hall on September 15 from 7 AM to 10 PM against the increased fees,” he added.
Arora also said that the hall regularly hosts government-sponsored tournaments, which often disrupt regular access for members, making the increased fees even more unjustified. “There are currently no alternative venues for sports, as the nearby Rangers Ground is now occupied for other activities, such as earlier Sunday market and now bus parking,” he added.
