Badrinath Dham cultural event sparks tradition violation row

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Jyotirmath

Swami Mukundanand Giri, a disciple of Shankaracharya of Jyotirpeeth, said that vulgarity had been displayed during a programme held recently at Badrinath Dham. “Cultural programme held at the revered shrine should have maintained the decorum and stayed away from any kind of vulgarity. What happened is sad and goes against the religious tradition,” he said. Recently, a two-day ‘Devbhoomi Cultural Festival’ was organised jointly by the Indian Army and the district administration in Badrinath Dham whose theme was ‘Our Heritage, Our Future.’

“As per the long-continuing traditions, even blowing a conch is considered prohibited so as not to disturb the concentration of Lord Nara-Narayana before the shrine’s doors open. But the events were held before the doors opened, which are not in accordance with religious decorum,” he said, adding that Badarikashrama is a place of penance for sages and saints.

He urged the chief minister to express his views on this matter and take strict action against the violators of the shrine’s decorum.
