The national highway to Badrinath was closed for about nine hours due to debris near the Taiya bridge on Sunday. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the debris and reopened the highway to traffic later in the day. Following considerable rainfall in the region on Saturday, the national highway was blocked by debris at about 5 AM on Sunday. Road widening work is also being undertaken on this stretch of the highway. The highway being blocked by debris resulted in long queues of vehicles on the road. The BRO soon started the task of clearing the road. As vehicles carrying pilgrims to Badrinath formed a long queue, some of the travelers sat in the vehicles while others sat on the road while waiting for the highway to be reopened. Initially the stranded travelers had to face inconvenience due to absence of water and food items. Shortly afterwards, the Chamoli district administration provided bottled water, biscuits, snacks and other relief items to the pilgrims and tourists. The debris were cleared and the highway was reopened to traffic at about 2 PM.
