Bageshwar police seize Rs 1.83 lakh cash with Congress campaign material

Bageshwar police on Friday recovered Rs 1.83 lakh cash during the checking of a car in the Baijnath area of the district. The police also found election campaign material related to the Congress party and its candidate in the district, said the Bageshwar superintendent of police Akshay Konde. He said that the police have intensified their checking drive across the district as the voting for the Assembly by-elections is scheduled to be held on September 5. He said that the police deployed in the Baijnath area for election duty received information through confidential sources about a vehicle that might be carrying some illegal material through the Baijnath area prohibited under the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the by-election. He said that the team stopped and checked the vehicle with the number UK06BF 8777. A man identified as Mukesh Chandra who belongs to Nainital district was driving the car. The police recovered a total of Rs 1,83,850 in cash along with some campaign material related to the Congress party and its candidate in the district, as claimed by SP. He said that the police asked him to show documents and reasons to carry the cash but he was unable to provide any valid response. Considering this, the police took action for the violation of MCC and seized cash and other materials as per the rules. The police are in the process of taking further action against the accused as per the law, said Konde. He said that by-elections are scheduled to be held in just four days and all police station in-charges have been directed to stay extra vigilant across the district, especially in selected vulnerable areas and entry points to the district.
