Bajrang Dal stir prompts transfer of constable to Police Lines

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun
A police constable, accused of harassing a woman in the Lakhibagh area, was sent to police lines on Wednesday after Bajrang Dal activists protested outside Lakkhibagh Chowki. The protesters blocked Saharanpur Road for nearly 90 minutes, demanding action against the constable and a fair investigation into the complaint.
Bajrang Dal workers alleged that no action had been taken for two days since the woman had submitted a complaint against the constable. They demanded immediate action from the senior police officers.
The protesters later squatted in the middle of Saharanpur Road, affecting movement of traffic towards Ghantaghar and Dharampur Chowk. The blockade caused long queues of vehicles, making the commuters remain stranded. Schoolchildren and patients were found stuck in the traffic logjam, too.
The circle officer (City), Swapnil Muyal reached the spot and spoke to the protesters. He pacified them after assuring action by 5 PM. The protesters withdrew the blockade after around 90 minutes. They, however, warned that they would block traffic at Clock Tower at 6 PM if no action was taken.
A few hours later, the police department sent the accused constable to the police lines. Police officials said the allegations would be examined during the investigation and further departmental action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
