Bansal penalises agencies for lapses in garbage collection and monitoring

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal imposed penalties on the Watergrace company and the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) for lapses in garbage collection and monitoring on Thursday.

During an inspection on Thursday, Bansal discovered that 10 garbage collection vehicles were missing from their assigned routes, with no alternative arrangements made by the responsible agency in some wards. The PMC, tasked with digitally monitoring garbage collection vehicles and flagging irregularities, also failed to report the issue.

The commissioner conducted her inspection at the PMC office, which oversees the movement of garbage collection vehicles across the city from the control room in the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) premises. The PMC is responsible for ensuring that all wards are covered as per regulations and reporting any lapses to the commissioner for action. However, their failure to highlight the vehicle shortage led to penalties against both the agency and the PMC. During the inspection, Bansal also interacted with residents who had registered complaints through the MCD’s toll-free helpline via phone.

While checking the status of their grievances, she learned that garbage collection vehicles were not operating on Sundays in certain areas. Taking serious note of these shortcomings, she directed the officials concerned to address these issues promptly and take strict action against the responsible agencies. Bansal further instructed officials to achieve 100 per cent source segregation of garbage in all wards and emphasised the importance of addressing public complaints efficiently.

She instructed the officials to have a proactive approach to ensure seamless garbage collection and effective grievance redressal. She also urged locals to call on MCD’s toll free number 18001804571 regarding their complaints.
