In latest Uttarakhand news, with completion of the two-day demolition drive conducted by the district administration and police in the Metropole hotel compound in Nainital marked as enemy property, the prohibitory order clamped by the district administration under 144 of CrPC in the area before the demolition drive started has been lifted. It is learnt from the district administration officials that 1.8 hectare land has been set free from the illegal occupation of 134 families. After the area was vacated, barbed wire was put around the 1.8 hectare land so as to stop anyone from entering. Though the operation, including the debris-removal process, took two days to complete there was no resistance to it coming from any quarters.
Informing about this long-delayed operation, the SDM Rahul Shah said that several departments were roped in in the demolition drive and it was completed in two days peacefully.
Notably, it took the administration several years to vacate the enemy property area worth billions of rupees due to the encroachers’ refusal to leave on their own despite notices issued to them repeatedly and litigation hurdles. Now, the area being vacated, decks have been cleared for setting up a facility for parking 500 cars which will ease the long-continuing parking problem and recurring traffic congestion in the city during the tourism season and weekends.
