The president of Uttarakhand unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Mahendra Bhatt has said that the opposition parties including the Congress should abandon their political opposition and support the Women Reservation Amendment Bill. He added that no one will be able to stop the women of the country from taking their rights.

Describing the special session of Parliament, commencing from Thursday as historic, he said this is the right time to grant constitutional rights to women under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He described Sonia Gandhi and the Congress party’s move to include OBCs in the women’s reservation law, similar to SCs and STs, as an attempt to derail the bill. Everyone knows that OBC reservations are not part of the constitution’s provisions for constitutional representation, he said.

He also described the upcoming amendment regarding delimitation as crucial in the effort to empower women of the country.

“ To ensure that no one’s representation in parliament and Vidhan Sabhas is undermined, it was made clear at the time of women’s reservation that all these reserved seats would be in addition to the current numbers. Furthermore, to ensure that seats in southern states and states with population control are not reduced, delimitation will be carried out with an increase of approximately 33 per cent based on the current state-wise numbers. In such a situation, the Congress’s hypocrisy about ensuring women’s reservations quickly but only after the new census is completely unjustified,’’ he said.
