In latest Uttarakhand news, this time, the brothers’ wrists will be adorned with rakhis made of Bhojpatra on the day of Raksha Bandhan. Bhojpatra has significant mythological and religious importance as this was being used traditionally in the ancient time for writing the sacred religious texts. This year, the celebration of Raksha Bandhan will be special due to this fact. The women working in self-help groups, formed under the National Rural Livelihood Mission in Chamoli district, have prepared rakhis from the bark of rarely found Himalayan Bhoj tree. These women will set up stalls in all the blocks of Chamoli district for selling such special, gaudy-looking rakhis made from Bhojpatra from August 24.
Earlier, these women were trained on the Bhojpatra calligraphy art by the district administration. Afterwards, they started preparing Badrinath’s Aarti, Badri Vishal’s Shlokas, Bhojpatra garlands and many types of pictures and souvenirs on Bhojpatra and selling these aesthetically rich artifacts principally through the Hilans outlets. They are now earning their livelihood through their sales. They said that the district administration had inspired them to make attractive and eco-friendly rakhis from Bhojpatra.
