The Dehradun branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will celebrate World Standards Day on October 14 to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts involved in the standardisation of various products. The theme of World Standards Day this year is the ‘Shared Vision for Better World Incorporating Sustainable Development Goal for Good Health and Wellbeing’. Addressing the media here on Friday, the senior director and head of BIS in Dehradun, Sudheer Bishnoi said that as a part of this year’s World Standards Day celebrations, BIS has been organising day-long programmes from October 9 in the State which will be conducted till October 21. He said that BIS operates various schemes like product certification (ISI mark), management systems certification, hallmarking of gold and jewellery or artefacts and laboratory services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection. “To spread awareness about these works that protect consumers, BIS has been conducting various programmes in the State. One of the major themes of the programme is Youth to Youth Connect under which, 12 students have been selected from Dehradun’s colleges to raise awareness about the importance of the standard and quality of products and how to check it. These volunteers are called Manak Mitra. Also, BIS representatives have also been interacting with Gram Panchayats with the help of NGOs to raise awareness among them as well. This is currently being done in Almora district,” said Bishnoi. He also informed that BIS has also established Standard Clubs in 250 schools of the State to raise awareness about Standards and Quality of products among young students who can spread this knowledge to their friends and families. “We are planning to establish these clubs in at least 1,000 schools,” he added.
