BJP accuses Congress of denying legal rights to women & spreading falsehoods about UCC

PNS | DEHRADUN

The Bharatiya Janata Party accused the Congress of attempting to deny women their legal rights by opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and spreading false narratives about the issue. The party’s State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan claimed that Congress was creating confusion around the term resident to mislead the public.

He stated that, despite Congress’ attempts to spread lies and confusion, the UCC will prevail with public support, ensuring legal equality across the country. Chauhan stated that there was widespread enthusiasm throughout the State but Congress leaders were struggling to digest this achievement. He alleged that the Congress was deliberately misrepresenting the law and sowing discord in society, attempting to undermine the unity and equality it promotes. He said that the Congress had always been opposed to empowering women, both in the State and across the nation.

He stated that, whether in government or opposition, Congress had never undertaken any significant initiatives for women’s empowerment. He claimed that with the implementation of UCC, women in the State now have equal legal rights in areas like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property but Congress did not want to grant women their rightful place in society.

According to him, those opposing the UCC were essentially working against the liberation of Muslim women from practices like polygamy and halala, among others. He further accused Congress of attempting to protect immoral practices by shielding criminal elements involved in exploitative relationships, particularly under the guise of preserving cultural norms. .

Addressing alleged falsehood spread by Congress, Chauhan refuted the claim that the UCC will make anyone who had lived in Uttarakhand for a year a permanent resident. He clarified that the rule merely required individuals residing in the State for more than a year, whether for employment, business or other reasons, to comply with the law. There was no provision for making someone a permanent resident under the UCC and Congress’ distortion of this rule was nothing more than an attempt to confuse the public. He said that despite the Congress’ opposition, the UCC law will ultimately bring legal uniformity through public cooperation.
