Gajraj Bisht of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Lalit Joshi of the Congress filed their nomination for the mayoral position in the Municipal Corporation of Haldwani on Monday. Bisht was accompanied by MP and Union minister of State Ajay Tamta, Kaladhungi MLA Banshidhar Bhagat and former mayor Jogendra Pal Singh Rautela, among others, while filing his nomination. Bisht thanked the people for their support. He said that the double-engine government will continue to facilitate development of Haldwani. The manner in which the BJP is standing united without any factionalism shows clearly that the party will win this election, he said. The works of the previous mayor will also be carried forward, Bisht added.
The Congress candidate Joshi was accompanied by party leaders and supporters while filing his nomination. Haldwani MLA Sumit Hridayesh, former Assembly speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal and other party leaders accompanied Joshi. Addressing party workers at the Congress office, he expressed confidence in his chances of defeating his BJP rival. Stating that he was receiving considerable public support, Joshi said that he will achieve a win with the help of party workers and leaders. Hridayesh said that the BJP mayor had disappointed the public during the past 10 years. He claimed that the people will teach the BJP a lesson and elect Joshi as the mayor of Haldwani. Kunjwal said that the people are facing problems related to roads, electricity and drinking water, and will support the Congress to resolve these issues.
