The Bharatiya Janata Party has strategically played the youth card by fielding Saurabh Thapliyal as its mayoral candidate from the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). Thapliyal’s candidacy has re-energised workers of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), uniting them under a common goal, the BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said. He claimed that Thapliyal’s candidacy has generated a wave of enthusiasm, especially among the youth, as well as a sense of unity among members of the ABVP and the BJYM. He said that by nominating a young and dynamic face, the BJP has sent a strong message to its supporters, emphasising its commitment to promoting dedicated and youthful leaders. The move has particularly resonated with first-time voters and young party workers who see Thapliyal as a symbol of fresh leadership, he said. Chauhan claimed that social media platforms have been flooded with support for Thapliyal as his track record as a student leader and party activist inspires confidence among the youth. He stated that Thapliyal’s political journey began with the ABVP, where he made history by becoming the first president of the DAV College students’ union from the ABVP. He won consecutive elections in 1999 and 2000, setting records and establishing a solid foundation for ABVP’s dominance in the college. Later, as the State president of the BJYM, he further cemented his reputation as a dedicated and influential leader. Chauhan claimed that Thapliyal’s candidacy has re-energised ABVP and BJYM workers, uniting them under a common goal, enabling the party to achive the strategic aim behind fielding him.
