The Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed that about 75 per cent of the votes polled were in its favour. Addressing the media for the first time after polling in the Lok Sabha election, the BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt said that the opposition admitting its defeat resulted in a lack of competition which led to the low voter turnout.
Thanking the voters on behalf of the BJP for participating in the elections, Bhatt said that considering the feedback being received, the people of Uttarakhand have voted with open hearts for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Taking pride in the capabilities of the party workers, he said that all the office bearers and workers responsibly undertook the tasks accorded to them. Bhatt said, “The people want the achievement of Viksit Bharat under PM Modi’s leadership and the enthusiasm for this was witnessed in the polling. The public approved PM Modi’s 10-year report card. The BJP received the blessings of people from all religions, segments and castes. The women, youths, farmers and poor along with all segments in this State voted in favour of PM Modi.”
The BJP State president further said that as per the aim of the party, 75 per cent of the total votes polled will be in favour of the BJP. He claimed that all the five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand will be won by the party candidates. Referring to the comparatively low voter turnout, he said, “The opposition, especially the Congress had admitted its defeat even before polling took place. This resulted in a lack of competition in Uttarakhand during the election and this is the reason why there was a slight decrease in the voter turnout- with most of those not voting being supporters of the Congress and other opposition parties. The central and State leaders of the Congress admitting defeat before the polling disappointed their supporters who did not bother to visit the polling booths to cast their vote. The biggest reason for the lower voter turnout was the apathy of the Congress supporters. The BJP succeeded in getting its voters to the polling stations. We were consistently active among the voters and graded them and motivated them to vote. Further, the marriage programmes and sudden rise in temperatures also affected the timing of the voters and the voter turnout.”
Regarding the residents of some villages boycotting the election, Bhatt said that abstaining from voting is not the solution. He said that in most of the places where the locals boycotted the polls, road and development works have been hampered by environmental, legal, geographic and technical reasons. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken cognisance of this and the issues will be resolved soon, he added.
