BJP engaging in name change gimmick- U’khand Congress

Sunday, 30 October 2022 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Terming the decision of Uttarakhand government to change the name of Lansdowne and other places as another gimmick of the BJP to get votes, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has said that Lansdowne is not a symbol of slavery as being claimed by the government. Interacting with the media persons here on Saturday, Mahara said that nothing will happen by changing the names. He said that instead of engaging in rhetoric of changing names, the government should have constructed a hospital or some institute in the area. The government should create employment opportunities and provide facilities to the people, he said.

The PCC president added that the government is trying to deviate the attention of the people from real issues concerning the people. He said that the government should answer as to where the money for the Dehradun Smart city project has gone and why the city roads are in very bad shape. “The condition of the roads in the State is in such a bad condition that the CM had to direct the officers to make the roads free from potholes. The financial condition of the state is very bad as the debt burden has exceeded Rs one lakh crore. Every individual of the state is in a debt of Rs 26,000 crore,’’ he said.

On the court granting bail to the accused in the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) scam, Mahara said that it was expected since the cases were deliberately made weak. He said that the investigation agency should have either arrested the former chairman of the UKSSSC, S Raju or should have examined him to reveal the identity of the politicians trying to influence the functioning of the commission.

Mahara said that the Congress party has decided to undertake Yatras in the states not covered by the ongoing Bharat Joddo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi. He said that the Uttarakhand Congress would take up the issues raised by Rahul Gandhi in the Yatra. The PCC president said that apart from the national issues, State level issues would also be taken up in the Yatra. He cited the inaction in the Ankita Bhandari murder case, price rise, unemployment, backdoor appointments in state assembly and the Agnipath scheme as some of the issues that the party would take up in the Yatra.
