BJP expels Roorkee mayor for anti-party activities

Saturday, 02 July 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled Roorkee mayor Gaurav Goel from the party for a period of six years. Goel was expelled from the party on the directions of BJP State president Madan Kaushik for continued anti-party activities and controversies which were going against the party lines.

Goel had contested the local body elections as an independent after leaving the BJP when the party didn’t field him and had joined the BJP soon after election in July 2020 along with 12 councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Roorkee (MCR). However, soon after rejoining the BJP, Goel’s functioning elicited considerable opposition especially from BJP councillors. More recently, he was also accused of seeking Rs 25 lakh bribe for facilitating renewal of a land lease.

According to the party, he was expelled because of the dispute between him and BJP councillors in MCR, allegedly seeking Rs 25 lakh bribe for lease renewal- a case being investigated by the police, hampering work on announcements made by the chief minister at the behest of MLAs, hampering development of Roorkee city, consistently making statements against the party and other anti-party activities.
