The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has accused the ruling BJP of murdering democracy in the country with the help of agencies like Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax (IT) department and Central Bureau of Investigation. Addressing a Press conference at the Congress Bhawan here on Friday, the PCC president said that freezing of the bank accounts of the Congress party by the IT department is a glaring example of the manner in which the BJP government is hell bent upon destroying democracy in the country. He informed that the IT department has imposed a penalty in a seven-year old case in which delay of some days occurred in filing return of Rs 14.40 lakh deposited in the account of the party. The department has now imposed a penalty of Rs 210 crore on the Congress party and has transferred Rs 115 crore from different accounts of the Congress party as recovery and freezed the accounts. Mahara claimed that as per the regulations, the IT department should have imposed a penalty of only Rs 10,000 to 15,000 on the party.
The PCC president said that one can see only the banners and posters of the BJP on the roads while the Congress is being asked to give details of train journeys of its leaders. He said that it has also been revealed that electoral bonds worth Rs 400 crore were donated to BJP by some companies after raids by ED. Similarly companies showing profit of less than Rs one crore purchased bonds worth Rs 50-60 crore.
The PCC president said that operation lotus of the BJP has destabilised nine governments in the country and it is now manifesting in the form of coercion of opposition leaders with the help of ED and IT. He said that the arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is most unfortunate and has tarnished the image of India and its democracy.
