Terming the decision taken on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Uttarakhand cabinet in its first meeting on Thursday as historic, the state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that the UCC would bring an end to the politics of appeasement. The State media in charge of the BJP Manvir Chauhan said that by taking up the proposal on UCC in its very first meeting the Dhami government has given a clear message that the government would fulfil the promises made to the people of Uttarakhand in a time bound manner. “CM Dhami had said that the BJP after forming the government would take a decision on UCC and the cabinet in its very first meeting had put a stamp of approval on it. This shows the commitment of the BJP government and proves that the government is serious on the promises made during the elections,’’ he said. Chauhan added that since the UCC gives equal rights to everyone the opposition parties should also support it. He said that the Supreme Court (SC) too has ruled that the country should have UCC as it will strengthen the concept of one country and one system.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Dhami cabinet in its very first meeting on Thursday had taken a decision to constitute a committee on the UCC. The committee would have representation of legal experts, all the stakeholders and representatives of different religions. The committee would prepare the draft of the UCC and based on it the state government would implement the UCC.
